Overview
Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease is a growing clinical concern in the United States and globally. The complex and ill-defined interplay between the bacteria, their host, and environments make this disease very challenging to diagnose, manage, treat, and prevent. Additional features such as bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, advanced age, gender, ethnicity, diet, weight management and housing geography add additional complexity to an already difficult medical disease. This conference aims to alleviate some of this burden by bringing clinical and research topic experts together with NTM patients and their advocates for an engaging and up-date-date discussions. Further inspiration will be garnered from the conference location in Hawai’i, the U.S. state shouldering the highest number of disease cases, underscoring the need for more treatment options, improving access to clinical trials for all, and uncovering new ways to mitigate exposures. Monday: Growing significance of bronchiectasis and NTMPD in Hawai’i, Asia and the Pacific Islands Field experts will provide up-to-date information regarding host susceptibility to infection, environmental sources, outlook for MAC and M. abscessus infections, usefulness of bacterial genomics to understand disease, biomarkers discovery pipelines, and utility of phage therapy. Target audience: Pulmonologists, infectious disease physicians, general practice/family and internal medicine physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, and other healthcare professionals such as radiologists who diagnose and treat people with NTM. Tuesday: Important Intersections for NTM Field experts will discuss how NTM infections intersect with other clinical problems such as bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, and whether there are animal reservoirs for NTM. Finally, new resources will be shared and discussed including access to the Bronchiectasis and NTM Care Center Networks and needs to encourage more accessible clinical trials. Wednesday: Bronchiectasis and NTM Resources Speakers will address the importance of the patient voice in NTM research. Experts will discuss novel NTM biomarkers and the next generation in NTM research as well as highlight the importance of registries in tracking NTM infections.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Recognize host and environmental risk factors for acquiring NTM pulmonary disease
  2. Summarize the epidemiology of NTM pulmonary disease
  3. Describe methods to detect NTM
  4. Identify therapies to treat NTM pulmonary disease
  5. Explore the utility of registry data to compare local NTM pulmonary disease data to national data
  6. Generate mechanisms to improve access for NTM pulmonary disease treatment

Accreditation
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
