Overview
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may impact the way people interact with others, handle problems, and make decisions. Some may participate in activities that have known negative health outcomes such as smoking, alcohol and drug use, and risky sexual behavior. An adult who has experienced one or more ACEs is more prone to exhibit illicit behaviors such as drug addiction or criminal activities. Incarceration and the medical care costs associated with illicit drug use can be substantial to a local government. As such, childhood mental disorders have severely impacted East Texas. Smith County and its county seat, Tyler, have the highest rate of suicides of any county in the state. COVID has increased the stress factor, with schools, churches, and community organizations being stretched to the limit with new cases among children. Along with the issues the pandemic has created, it has also offered an opportunity to face mental health needs. In the past, conservative communities have been reticent to even discuss mental health and its causes. The added stress has opened the door to a consideration of publicly funding and supporting initiatives to help the underserved. This conference will serve to start a conversation across the Northeast Texas region involving educators, healthcare professionals, parents, and policy makers on how to address ACEs. Establishing a system of cooperation and open communication across all stakeholders is paramount to affect positive outcomes related to ACEs, including improved health and life expectancy, greater educational achievement and earning capacity, lowered incarceration rates and substance abuse.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe and define adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and how the COVID pandemic has exacerbated them. Identify their positionality and discuss community-based interventions that they can participate in.
