Overview: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is now finding a presence in trauma centers, offering critical support for patients experiencing severe respiratory and/or cardiac failure. Veno-Venous (V-V) ECMO is primarily used for pulmonary support and has demonstrated promising outcomes. Veno-Arterial (V-A) ECMO has the ability to support patients who have suffered both cardiac and pulmonary injuries.  Over the past decade the role of ECMO in trauma has continued to expand with broader applications, transport feasibility, and relative contraindications.



Objectives:
1. Discuss differences between Veno-Venous and Veno-Arterial ECMO indications.
2. Identify inclusion/exclusion criteria for trauma ECMO candidacy.
3. Discuss feasibility concerns related to ECMO use in trauma.
